Inset Wood Burning Stoves
Built-in Wood Burning Stove
Wood burning inset stoves are hearth mounted and generally installed within a solid fuel fireplace surround. An insert or inset stove is often purchased to replace an open fire or wood-burning back boiler as they produce far greater efficiency than open fires — in some cases, you'll find inset stove efficiencies in excess of 80%.
A built-in wood burning stove can be fitted with a three- or four-sided frame, and larger models are often positioned higher up the chimney breast which can be a real space saver! The benefit of an inset wood stove is that they do not require a full inglenook opening, which avoids the building work associated. These inset wood stoves are built worldwide by leading manufacturers, and they all meet current eco standards too.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Inset Wood Stoves Need a Hearth?Inset wood stoves usually require a constructional hearth beneath them. The hearth must be made from a non-combustible material and be fitted level. A hearth often sits beneath the stove, and clearances to non-combustibles of 225mm at the front of the stove and 150mm on either side must be provided. It is always worth double-checking the position of your stove and the clearances required in the manufacturer fitting instructions.
Do I Need a Flue Liner with an Inset Stove?Fitting a flue liner with an inset woodburning stove is not mandatory (unless specifically stated in the product manual). We do however recommend that a flue liner is installed with all solid fuel appliances. A flue liner offers improved safety, cleanliness, and efficiency but your inset stove will benefit from better performance if installed with a flue liner.
Inset Vs Cassette Wood Stoves?Inset & cassette stoves are very similar however there are a few small differences. Cassette stoves have an extra skin of metal around the firebox that helps to trap hot air between the layers, this warm air comes out through the air vents of the stove. The other main difference is that cassette stoves will sit flush against a wall and can sometimes be raised from the floor level. An inset or inset stove sits on a hearth and will usually fit within a standard British opening measuring 16" wide by 22" high.
